From the Wood Family’s Historic Mulberry Hill Home, Edenton, North Carolina Enoch Wood Perry, Jr. was born in Boston and received artistic training at the Düsseldorf Academy in Germany and at Thomas Couture's studio in France. Perry also traveled to Venice, where he served as the U.S. Consul between 1856 and 1858. He exhibited his scenes of Venice at the National Academy of Design show in 1858. Upon his return to the United States, his reputation was made, and he was granted an Associate membership in the Academy.
Perry captured American landscapes and portraiture, particularly in New England and the Hudson River Valley, but his travels also took him West, to the Deep South, and eventually the Pacific, including Hawaii.
Enoch Wood Perry's paintings are held in the collections of major institutions, including the Honolulu Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He continued to paint until his death in 1915, leaving behind a diverse body of work that bridges American realism and the global influences of the 19th century.
