18th century oil on canvas (lined), unsigned, depicting various figural scenes within architectural ruins opening to a distant city and landscape beyond, the canvas verso stenciled "J.R. SHORT & SON/CHAPEL HILL, N.C.", set within a later green painted and gilt cassetta frame, the lower border with three mullioned rectangular mirrors between scrolled foliate medallions.

Stretcher size 38 x 52 in.; frame size 53 1/2 x 58 1/4 x 3 in.

Painting mounted to later canvas and wax lined; possibly original stretcher; scattered touch up repairs visible under UV light; some areas of craquelure to dark foliage; crack to interior gilt molding; frame with later green repaint and later glass; frame with some areas of chipping and associated paint and gilt losses.
