From the Estate of the late Ralph L. Townes, Raleigh, North Carolina Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Russell Smith immigrated to the United States as a child and settled in Pennsylvania. Initially trained as a theatrical scene painter, he later focused on landscape painting, capturing the rugged beauty of the Appalachian Mountains, the Pennsylvania countryside, and other scenic vistas. In addition, he went on several European tours with his wife and children, painting in England, Wales, Scotland, Switzerland, Italy and other countries. His work, influenced by the Hudson River School, emphasized careful attention to light, atmosphere, and natural detail.
