Joseph Binder was born in Vienna and studied academic classicism at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Binder gained recognition in the 1830s and 1840s for his portraiture, often depicting members of the Austrian aristocracy and bourgeoisie. His style blended realism with a certain idealization, characteristic of Biedermeier aesthetics, a prominent style in Central Europe during the period of political repression after the Napoleonic Wars.

Very good condition, light age cracking; the frame with minor age separation at the corners.
