This painting is after an original work by Italian Baroque artist Salvator Rosa, created between 1660 and 1665. It depicts the encounter between Saint Anthony Abbot and Saint Paul the Hermit, in which the two saints are shown receiving bread from a raven set against a vast, rugged wilderness. Rosa was known for integrating spiritual and philosophical themes into dynamic landscapes, such as this one. The original work is held in the collection of the Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh.

The painting has an antique lining, age cracking, and several areas of retouching visible under UV light.
