Jack Lorimer Gray was a Canadian-American artist best known for his maritime paintings that captured the life, labor, and landscapes of the North Atlantic. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Gray developed an early fascination with the sea, which became the central subject of his work. He studied at the Nova Scotia College of Art and later at the Art Students League of New York. Often living and working alongside fishermen, sailors, and shipbuilders, Gray brought an authentic perspective to his scenes of working harbors, coastal villages, and marine vessels.

Throughout his career, Gray gained recognition for the accuracy and atmosphere of his maritime art, which combined strong draftsmanship with a vivid sense of place and narrative. His works were exhibited widely in North America and were especially admired by collectors with an interest in nautical history and seafaring life. In addition to his easel paintings, Gray also created murals and illustrations, all centered around his deep connection to the sea. His legacy continues through his evocative portrayals of maritime culture, from North Atlantic harbors to the remote and icy expanses of the Scotia Sea, preserving a visual record of a vanishing way of life.
