Contemporary leather with gilt-lettered and ruled spine. 8vo; [4ads], xxiii, [1], [17]-568pp. plus rear ads. "With one hundred and fifty-three wood engravings"; notes and comments by Joshua B. Flint. Includes the following inscription on the front free endpaper referencing The Battle of Island No. 10: "H. Ward(?) Dear Sir / I Send you a Book that / I Captured From a Rebel / on the Battle field / at Tipton Ville. Tennessee / near Island No. 10. / This the 10 day of Ap.(?) 1862 / I remain yours Truly / D. D. Cummings." (Boards scuffed and rubbed, with wear to extremities including spine, loss of head and tail bands, and cracking at rear joint; interior with toning, infrequent spotting, and occasional offsetting, edge wear, small tears, light soiling, and small damp stains; one leaf with small corner repair; ownership writing, stamps, and blind stamps; first free endpaper with inscription detached; wear to rear endpapers.)
