Bronze with enhanced verdigris patina, signed and dated "HEBALD 1988" with edition number "II/VI" to the domed terrace, mounted upon a black marble base, a spectacular composition of movement and the figural form.

40 1/2 x 19 x 11 in. (including marble base)

Previously gifted in support of museum operations to The Hyde Collection from the Charles R. Wood Foundation.

A sculptor working primarily in bronze but also in plaster, terracotta, and wood, Milton Hebald was known for his figural compositions. He was interested in the roots of sculpture from the eastern Mediterranean tradition through the Renaissance and Baroque periods, especially Bernini of Rome. Among his many large scale commissioned works throughout New York City is perhaps his most famous work of the Zodiac Group, a 220-foot-long bronze in the Pan American Terminal at John F. Kennedy Airport.

Hebald was born and raised in New York City where he studied at the Art Students League (enrolled at the young age of ten), the National Academy of Design, and the Beaux-Arts Institute. During the Great Depression, he worked for the WPA. His first solo show was in 1937 at the American Artists Congress Gallery, and he exhibited regularly at the Whitney Museum where two of his works rest in the permanent collection.

After 1955, he was active in Rome where he was awarded the Prix-de-Rome from the American Academy in Rome. Later, he moved to Lago di Bracciano until 2004, when he returned to the United States.

Good condition; some small minor chips to the marble base; small area of rubbing to the patina on figure's hair.
