Largely self-taught, he emerged in the 1980s through Cape Town’s Community Arts Project, using found materials like scrap metal and photographs to create assemblages.

Bester has received several honors, including the Order of Ikhamanga (Silver) and an honorary doctorate from the University of KwaZulu-Natal. His work is held in major international collections, including the Smithsonian and the David Bowie Collection. He lives and works in Kuilsrivier, continuing to create art that continues to tackle the social issues he experiences in his environment.
