Juan Medina was a Mexican painter celebrated for his unique blend of hyperrealism and surrealism. Born in Mexico City, he lived and worked in Mexico, France, and the United States. Largely self-taught, Medina enriched his artistic education through open studies at institutions such as the Musée du Louvre in Paris, Casa del Lago at the Universidad Autónoma de México, and the Universidad Iberoamericana. His artworks often feature figures—frequently nude or modestly veiled—set against minimalist backgrounds, exploring themes of memory, time, and perception. Medina's paintings are characterized by meticulous technique, incorporating elements like stone, wood, and mirrors to create layered, reflective compositions.
Over a career spanning more than two decades, Medina developed a distinctive visual language that challenged traditional Mexican art by moving beyond folkloric themes. His work was recognized internationally, earning him accolades such as the ARC Approved Living Master™ designation and multiple awards from the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts at the Carrousel du Louvre in Paris. Medina's contributions positioned him among the leading figures in contemporary Latin American art, known for his exploration of the subconscious and the reimagining of everyday objects through a scientific lens.
