Early 19th century, likely English or French, patinated bronze, cast in the form of a seated mastiff, the mouths articulate to hold novelty or calling cards, mounted to a slate base.

In 1797 Thomas Weeks established his renowned museum of 'mechanical curiosities' at Nos. 3 & 4 Tichbourne Street, London. The Regency period company specialized in various decorative arts objects including automaton clocks, inkstands, and other tabletop accessories consistent with the design and function of this charming pair of card holders.

Areas of rubbing to the patina; slate bases with chipping to edges; one slate base with crack and repair.
