This portrait is based on Charles Willson Peale's portrait of George Washington, painted from life, during a series of sittings in 1795.

Accompanied by a typed letter signed from Carol E. Hevner, Consultant for the Rembrandt Peale Catalogue Raisonne, on The Peale Family Papers letterhead, dated June 12, 1989. A data sheet on the portrait is included with the letter in which Carol Hevner lists a possible attribution to Sarah Miriam Peale, based on the "upturned corners of the mouth, the brightness of the color, the handling of light and the rather oily quality of the paint."
