Born and raised in New York City, Ellie Ali is a self-taught artist whose work is deeply rooted in the cultural vibrancy of mid-20th century jazz and literature. Her early influences evolved through years of travel and artistic exploration across North Africa, Europe, and India—experiences that continue to inform her rich visual language.

Ali’s work is distinguished by her unconventional use of materials, combining acrylics, Chinese ink, wax, and oil paints on paper. She considers paper her “co-conspirator,” relishing its responsiveness and surprising versatility. This dynamic relationship between medium and artist results in a body of work that is both expressive and technically compelling.
