From the Estate of the late Joel Hasen, Chapel Hill, North Carolina

Joel Hasen was the cousin of Burt Hasen.

Born in New York City, Burt drew artistic inspiration from his experiences in WWII as a military technician for the Air Force which involved the close study of aerial maps. He studied at the Art Students League with the painter Has Hoffman and received artistic training in Paris through the G.I. Bill.

Hasen was an active member of the 10th Street Scene which played a significant part in the growth of American art and in the diversification of styles evident in the art world today. A founding member of the March Gallery, like many of his contemporaries, Hasen is still under-recognized.

He was a longtime professor at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, and his work is included in many major collections including the Smithsonian Institution, the Library of Congress, the National Academy of Design, and the British Museum.

Burt Hasen’s work teeters between magical realism and surrealism. Thematically, there is a fantastical element throughout his work. This is more mysterious and alluring than dark and menacing. His etchings are populated by figures in varying states of metamorphosis, transitioning from human to animal, singularities to pluralities, background to foreground, inanimate to animate.

Selected Collections include the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington D.C.; Ro Gallery, NY; Anita Shapolsky Gallery, NY; Susan Teller Gallery, NY.

Some dust soiling to bronze crevices; stand with scattered small nicks and associated paint loss, underside of wood terrace with age check; otherwise good estate condition.
