Ciel Olsen Bergman was an influential American postmodern painter known for exploring environmental issues and feminist themes through her art. Originally trained as a psychiatric nurse, she later earned an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and went on to create a diverse body of work including paintings, installations, prints, and prose. Her art often employed metaphors from nature.

Beyond her artistic contributions, Bergman was an environmental innovator, and had a long academic career, teaching at institutions like University of California, Santa Barbara, where she advocated for women in academia. After retiring, she continued her creative and ecological work in New Mexico until her passing in 2017. Her work is featured in major collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
