Drawing from his Mexican and Italian heritage, his work often includes found objects like costume jewelry, figurines, and everyday items, arranged to explore themes of identity, consumerism, and cultural stereotypes. He splits his time between San Antonio and New York City, and his art reflects influences from both places.

In 2004, Mondini-Ruiz received the prestigious Rome Prize for Visual Arts from the American Academy in Rome. This award recognized his unique approach and contribution to contemporary art, particularly in how he uses humor and familiar materials to engage with complex social and cultural issues.
