William Louis Sonntag, Sr. was an American landscape painter linked to the Hudson River School, recognized for his detailed and expansive views of the American countryside. Born in East Liberty, Pennsylvania, he began his career in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he studied and taught art before traveling to Europe in the 1850s. His time abroad influenced his approach to composition and light, blending American naturalism with elements of European painting. Sonntag often focused on scenes from the Appalachian Mountains, New England, the Adirondacks and the Hudson River Valley.

Sonntag exhibited regularly at major institutions, including the National Academy of Design, where he became an associate member in 1860. His work reflects a careful observation of nature and an interest in large, open views, making him a steady presence in 19th-century American art. Today, he is remembered for his role in shaping the visual identity of the American landscape during that period.

Scattered paint flaking; areas of retouch visible under UV light; later gold paint to frame.
