From the Estate of the late Peggy Augustus, Old Keswick, Virginia Allen F. Brewer, Jr. was an American equine artist celebrated for his anatomically precise and spirited portraits of Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds. Born in Massachusetts and educated at Yale’s School of Fine Arts, he combined his deep knowledge of horses—gained through riding, training, and even dissecting a horse for study—with strong artistic training to create works for breeders and collectors. A WWII veteran who used his art skills in service, he later lived in Kentucky, where he trained and drove Standardbreds while building his reputation as one of America’s leading horse painters. After his untimely death in a plane crash, he was honored posthumously with induction into the Harness Racing Museum Hall of Fame.
Almahmoud (1947–1971) was a chestnut American Thoroughbred mare who had a lasting legacy as a broodmare. Bred by Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney and later owned by William G. Helis Sr., she won four of eleven starts, including the Colleen Stakes and Vineland Handicap, before retiring to stud. As a broodmare, she produced several exceptional daughters, most notably Cosmah, the dam of Halo (sire of Sunday Silence), and Natalma, the dam of Northern Dancer.
Good estate condition, grime trapped below glass, not examined outside the frame.
