From the Estate of the late Peggy Augustus, Old Keswick, Virginia Daniel Clowes was an English painter based in Chester, best known for his sporting subjects. He specialized in portraits of racehorses, hunting and shooting scenes, and depictions of dogs and other animals. His work combined accurate representation of animals with a lively sense of movement, making him a sought-after painter among sporting collectors and wealthy families during his lifetime.
The painting has been wax lined, with age cracking and restoration visible under UV light inspection.
