Oil on canvas (lined), not sighed, presented in a wood frame with gallery plaque affixed at lower center engraved "Flying Dutchman / By Bay Middleton out of Barbelle by Sanobeck / Winner of Derby and St. Leger 1843 / Trained by Fobert -- Ridden by Marlow / 1795 J. F. Herring Sr. 1865."

Stretcher size 19 1/4 x 29 in.; Frame dimensions 23 x 33 in.

Purchased by Peggy Augustus from a Sotheby's auction in the 1980s, sale number and lot number currently unknown.

The painting has been lined, age cracking and yellowing to the varnish, areas of retouching.
