A South Carolina Collection

Susannah Maybank was born in Charleston, South Carolina about 1733, the daughter of Joseph Maybank and Marianne Dupuy. She married Henry Michaux (Michaud), a French Huguenot, on June 20, 1756. Following Michaud's death, she married Dr. James Reid of St. Bartholomews Parish, on July 17, 1760.

Jeremiah Theus painted portraits of Dr. Reid and his wife, Susannah. The couple had three children before Dr. Reid's death in 1769. Susannah married a third and final time, to the Rev. Mr. Edward Jenkins, then rector of St. Bartholomew's Church, and later of St. Michael's and St. Phillip's.

Jeremiah Theus' portrait of Susannah Maybank Reid currently hangs above the fireplace in the east drawing room of the Edmonston-Alston House in Charleston, South Carolina.
