Late 19th century, patinated bronze casting after a model by Antoine-Louis Barye, signed "BARYE" to the naturalistic terrace.

13 3/4 x 22 1/2 x 9 1/2 in.

Private Collection, Edenton, North Carolina

Barye is known primarily for his realistic sculptures of animals. A prominent member of Les Animaliers, Barye was a frequent visitor of Paris' Jardin des Plantes where he could study his subjects. His work can be found in several prominent museum collections - The Metropolitan Museum holds an earlier casting of Tigre suprenant une antilope (Tiger Attacking an Antelope).
