From the Estate of the late Dr. Robert M. Comstock, Petersburg, Virginia Born in New York, John Mooney traveled to Georgia to enlist in the Confederate Army at the outbreak of the Civil War. After the war, he remained in the South and began painting professionally. He is known to have painted scenes of Savannah, Key West, Washington, D.C. and Richmond. In 1918, Mooney died in poverty after contracting tuberculosis. This painting depicts Jamestown's 1639 church tower with the Captain John Smith monument in the foreground and the settlement's tercentennial monument in the background. Mooney painted several versions of this scene, two of which have come up for auction.
