Aubrey Dale Greer was a self‑taught American artist celebrated for his luminous and romantic landscapes and still life paintings. Born in Pond Creek, Oklahoma, he spent his early years in rural Kansas, where he left school at a young age—once even expelled for drawing in class—and began to support himself drawing and painting in any way he could, from murals and stage curtains to signs and restaurant décor. His varied work during the Depression, including painting church domes and striping cars at a Ford plant, as well as his time as a logger and railroad worker in the Rockies, deepened his connection to Western landscapes—scenes that later became staples of his art.

Greer’s richly detailed renderings of the American West—particularly views of the Grand Canyon and Yosemite Falls—earned him critical acclaim and widespread popularity. Influenced by luminous landscape painters like Thomas Moran, Albert Bierstadt, and Frederic Edwin Church, Greer developed a romantic style that captivated collectors and critics alike. Though he lived primarily in New York City and later Austin, Texas, his works maintained a devoted following in the Southwest. Among his notable achievements: a painting, Cattle Country, was purchased by President Lyndon B. Johnson for display at the White House, and he was honored as a Texas Ranger in 1980.
