German-born American painter Max Weyl immigrated to the United States in 1853. Weyl settled in Washington, D.C., where he transitioned from a career as a watchmaker to become a celebrated landscape artist. With early influences from the Hudson River School and later by the Barbizon painters, Weyl became known for his tonal depictions of the Potomac River, Rock Creek Park, and the Washington countryside. A founding figure of the Washington Landscape School, he earned recognition through exhibitions at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, prizes from the Society of Washington Artists, and acquisitions by major institutions.
Good estate condition, very light craquelure and areas of retouch, slight waviness to canvas and yellowing to varnish.
