Cullen Yates was an American Impressionist painter known for landscapes, coastal views, and still lifes. Born in Bryan, Ohio, he trained at the National Academy of Design in New York under William Merritt Chase and later in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts, Académie Colarossi, and Académie Julian.

He worked in artist colonies such as Shinnecock Hills and Old Lyme, Connecticut, and became a member of the National Academy of Design. Yates painted widely across New England and Pennsylvania, eventually settling in Shawnee-on-the-Delaware, PA. His works are held in major institutions including the National Gallery of Art, Brooklyn Museum, and Smithsonian.
