From the Estate of the late Susan C. Frankenberg, Hillsborough, North Carolina Julie Hart Beers was an American landscape painter known for her richly detailed depictions of the Hudson River Valley and New England scenery. Born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, she was the younger sister of renowned painters James McDougal Hart and William Hart, and though she had no formal art education, she learned painting techniques from her brothers and developed a distinct style of her own. Beers was one of the few professional female landscape artists of the 19th century in the United States, a notable achievement at a time when the art world was dominated by men.
Working primarily in oils, she became associated with the Hudson River School tradition. Her works often feature forest interiors, river views, and dramatic vistas, rendered with careful attention to light and natural detail. Beers exhibited widely during her career, including at the National Academy of Design and the Brooklyn Art Association, and she maintained studios in both New York City and Catskill, New York.
Age cracking to lower edge of the canvas, patched hole with associated retouching visible under UV light, slight yellowing to varnish and surface grime; minor cracking and losses to frame.
