According to the written history available with this lot, this portrait was owned by Peter E. Gibbs, Richmond, Virginia, from 1873 to 1950.

This portrait is based on Charles Willson Peale’s miniature of George Washington, created around 1777. Peale painted the original from life while Washington and his army were encamped at Valley Forge. The original work is now part of the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Light spotting, and a scratch and flake to upper area of sheet, loss with retouch at tight edge; the frame with age cracking at losses.
