John Francis Murphy was an American tonalist. Primarily self-taught, he was well regarded as an artist during his lifetime. He was elected a full academician to the National Academy of Design in 1885. He was also a member of the Society of American Artists and the American Watercolor Society. His works are in numerous prominent public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.; and the Art Institute of Chicago.
