Born in Wales, Edmund C. Coates immigrated to the United States and settled in Brooklyn, New York. Best known for his idealized views of the Hudson River Valley and the White Mountains in New Hampshire, he also painted romantic Italian landscapes and maritime scenes. Paintings by Coates are found in numerous public collections including the New York Historical Society, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Shelburne Museum.
Stable craquelure; yellowing to varnish; light surface grime; some chipping and rubbing to frame.
