George Eastman Cookwas an American landscape painter born near Norwich, New York, whose work blended European training with American themes. He studied under John Enneking in Boston and later at the Académie Julian in Paris, spending many years painting abroad. Cook returned to the United States in 1929, settling in North Carolina, though much of his work was tragically lost in a fire shortly thereafter.

The canvas has been wax lined, with age cracking, areas of retouching including a large area of loss at lower left.
