Joseph Benjamin O’Sickey was an American painter and educator known for his colorful depictions of gardens, still lifes, landscapes, and figures. Born in Detroit and raised in Cleveland, he studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art, graduating in 1940. After serving in World War II, he combined his studio practice with teaching, holding positions at Ohio State University, the Akron Art Institute, Western Reserve University, and later at Kent State University, where he taught from 1964 until his retirement in 1989.

O’Sickey exhibited widely throughout his career, including over twenty appearances in the Cleveland Museum of Art’s May Show between 1938 and 1977. His work was also represented by major New York galleries such as Jacques Seligmann and Kennedy Galleries. Public collections holding his paintings include the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Canton Museum of Art, the Butler Institute of American Art, and the Westmoreland Museum of American Art. Recognized with the Cleveland Arts Prize in 1974, O’Sickey remains noted for his direct, vibrant style and his long influence as a teacher and painter in Ohio and beyond.
