Circa 1840, mahogany veneer, deal secondary, three part form, upper backsplash with brass columnar supports, C-scroll lid opening to reveal a well developed interior with ten valanced pigeon holes over five small burl veneered drawers over a pull-out writing surface with three embossed green leather surfaces, the central panel with louvered support, the left and right panels slide to the back to reveal storage in ink compartments, the back board with a row of faux drawers, the desk set on two pedestals with three graduated drawers each, molded base, on casters, finished panel back, the interior brass lock plate stamped "Hobbs & Co., London".

Accompanied with a notecard reading "...The desk was used by my sister as Headmistress of Charleywood College for girls with little or no sight and was given to her by the governors when she retired. I think it was probably in the house when it was known as the Cedars and was built for Mv. J.S. Gelhalt in 1865. He was a governor of the Bank of England & H.P. for Clapham Cater Widnes..."

Top shelf of backsplash with sticky residue at center and minor cock beading loss; upper board with old marring; later green leather writing surfaces; interior compartments with old ink staining; no key; overall good usable condition.
