Late 19th century, tombstone gilt brass and silvered dial signed J.E. Caldwell & Co. with Arabic hour chapters, ornate chased floral and scroll spandrels, the center with subsidiary dial, upper left corner with silent and strike options, upper right corner with Whittington and Westminster chime options, beneath a hand-painted lunette with calendar and moon phases, operated by a (3) train brass musical movement striking on a rack of (8) bells, the reverse panel stamped "MADE IN ENGLAND" and numbered 3013, mounted with additional (5) arm gong strike, set within a Classical style mahogany case inlaid with urn and ribbon tied bell flower motifs, paterae and floral scroll and swag, the hood in rectangular case body with carved fully turned and fluted Corinthian columns with brass mounts, surmounted with (3) spired sphere brass finials over a cove molded base with bracket feet, includes pendulum, (3) weights and case key.
100 x 24 x 15 3/4 in.
Some minor surface scratches and marks to the veneers; a few edge nicks to the corners; areas of rubbing and tarnish to gilt and silvered elements; three brass column reeds detached but present; lunette with some paint loss; some loss to right rear bracket foot; some small areas of wood loss to interior front case door.
