Nancy Camden Witt was a Richmond based sculptor turned painter. She attended Randolph-Macon Woman's College from 1948 to 1950, received her BA from Old Dominion University in 1965 and her MFA in sculpture from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1967. She received an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from Randolph-Macon College in 1997 and continued producing new work until she passed away in late 2009. Her work is in numerous public collections including the Mint Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina and the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk, Virginia.
Witt described her artistic approach as “metarealism,” a vision of reality existing parallel to the everyday, where familiar objects such as windows, chairs, and landscapes are reimagined in altered, poetic relationships. Her style blended realism with surreal and symbolic elements, often introducing subtle dislocations or twists that transformed the ordinary into moments of reflection and psychological resonance.
