Francisco Domingos “Chico” da Silva was a Brazilian painter known for his imaginative depictions of tropical flora, fauna, and mythological creatures. Born in Acre to an Indigenous Peruvian father and Brazilian mother, he grew up in the Amazon before settling in Fortaleza, where he began drawing murals on fishermen’s houses with charcoal and natural pigments. In 1943, Swiss artist Jean-Pierre Chabloz encouraged him to work with gouache and canvas, helping bring his art to international attention.
Chico’s intricate, colorful compositions earned him critical recognition, including an Honorable Mention at the 1966 Venice Biennale and participation in the 1967 São Paulo Biennial.
