He lives and works on the island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea. He is a ceramic artist breaking the boundaries between ceramics and sculpture, creating assembled forms, many of which are made to be hung on walls, and composed of simple geometrical shapes, glazed in strong, single colors.

His artworks are held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum, and MAD/Museum of Arts and Design, all in New York City; The Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Designmuseum Danmark, Copenhagen; as well as The McManus, Dundee's Art Gallery & Museum which was purchased by the Contemporary Art Society in 2005. In 2012 he created a permanent installation at the V&A in London. Geertsen is represented by Køppe Contemporary Objects, Bornholm, Denmark, Jason Jacques Gallery, New York, and Galerie NeC nilsson et chiglien, Paris.
