Private Collection, Winston-Salem, North Carolina Virginia Derryberry creates large-scale narrative oil paintings and fabric constructions that draw on mythology and alchemy to explore layered meaning and multiple perspectives. Her work often uses multi-panel formats and shifts between realistic and abstract passages to construct ambiguous, shifting spaces. In 2023, she received a North Carolina Artist Support Grant to expand on her explorations of “rebis,” the alchemical concept of duality in dialogue.
Derryberry has exhibited widely across the United States, with her Private Domain series traveling nationally since 2016. She has received numerous honors, including awards from the Southeastern College Art Association, a Visiting Artist fellowship at the American Academy in Rome, and the College Art Association’s Distinguished Teaching of Art Award. Her work is represented in public and private collections, including major commissions at Hartsfield-Atlanta International Airport and the Knoxville Convention Center. She taught at UNC Asheville from 1996–2015 and at the New York Academy of Art in 2016. (Courtesy of the Artist's Website)
