A graduate of East Carolina University, Leary taught painting and three dimensional design classes at Mitchell Community College and later at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte in the late 1970s. In 1980 Dean opened a private sculpture studio in Statesville, North Carolina, where he continues to work today.

Surface staining throughout from outdoor display; a few minor edge chips and scuffs.
