Ernest Lawson was a Canadian-American painter and member of The Eight, the group of artists who exhibited together in 1908 to protest the National Academy of Design's restrictive policies. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, he moved to the United States in 1888 and studied at the Art Students League under John Twachtman. He continued his studies at the Académie Julian in Paris. Lawson was the only landscape painter among The Eight, and his work was characterized by heavy impasto applied with a palette knife, depicting the Hudson and Harlem Rivers, upper Manhattan, and winter scenes.

Lawson contributed to the landmark Armory Show of 1913 and became a full academician at the National Academy of Design in 1917. His work is held in major collections including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Columbus Museum of Art, and Whitney Museum of American Art.
