Primarily recognized as an illustrator of medical texts, William Branks Stewart also painted expressive southern landscapes. Born in Airdrie, Scotland, he studied at the Glasgow School of Art before settling in New Orleans, Louisiana. Beginning in 1946, he served as a professor at the Louisiana State University School of Medicine. Stewart was active in the New Orleans Art League and the Association of Medical Illustrators, where he held a board position, and exhibited frequently with the Art League.

Minor separation to frame corners; otherwise in good estate condition.
