Rafael Hastings was a pioneering multidisciplinary artist whose practice encompassed painting, film, video, performance, choreography, and literature. A trailblazer in experimental video art in Peru, he bridged artistic dialogues between Latin America and Europe. His first exhibition in 1967 at Galerie Racines in Brussels, presented by filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard and choreographer Maurice Béjart, marked the beginning of an innovative and influential career. In the 1970s, his collaborations with the Centro de Arte y Comunicación in Buenos Aires produced groundbreaking works exploring identity, mortality, and spirituality. Through his partnerships with musician Manongo Mujica and choreographer Yvonne von Mollendorff, Hastings continued to expand the language of contemporary art. His work remains highly regarded for its conceptual depth, cross-cultural reach, and enduring impact on Latin American avant-garde art.
