Private Collection, Winston-Salem, North Carolina Born in Providence, Rhode Island, Emma Levinia Swan was a distinguished American painter known for her luminous still lifes, particularly her refined floral compositions. Trained under her father, a skilled cameo-cutter, and later with Abbott Thayer, she also studied in Germany and Holland, where she absorbed the influence of the Old Masters. Swan taught at the Rhode Island School of Design from 1902 to 1909 and was a member of the Providence Art Club.
