Harriette Sutcliffe was born in St. Pancras, London, on September 20, 1852, the daughter of lithographic artist John Sutcliffe and his wife, Harriet (née Archer). Following her mother’s death in 1880, Sutcliffe remained at home with her father while developing her own artistic training. She entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1882 and first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1881 with a portrait bust.

Sutcliffe earned recognition for her refined and sensitive portrayals, particularly of women and domestic subjects. Her 1891 painting After the Bath drew praise from The Queen magazine, which placed her among the “first rank” of contemporary women painters. Other exhibited works include Beauty and the Beast (1899) and illustrations for children’s annuals and books. Sutcliffe's paintings reflect the grace and narrative intimacy characteristic of the Victorian genre tradition, capturing both the elegance and sentiment of her era.

Masking varnish visible under UV light, with evidence of minor scattered retouch under sitter's chin and along perimeter of canvas.
