Patinated bronze model of a stately lion, mounted atop a carved granite precipice with "J. E. MASSON" carved signature.

Sculptor and engraver in medals, Jules-Edmond Masson practiced in the Le Animalier tradition like his father and teacher, Clovis Masson. He began sending waxes, bronzes, plaster and marble works to the Salon starting in 1890, with a preference for Oriental scenes and for equestrian figures of historic people. His works can be found in museum collections including Dijon and Troyes.
