Hugh Bolton Jones was an American landscape painter celebrated for his depictions of rural American scenes. Born in Baltimore, he studied at the Maryland Institute and was influenced by Frederic Edwin Church while studying in New York. He began exhibiting at the National Academy of Design in 1867. In 1876, Jones and his brother Francis traveled to Europe for four years, joining the American artists' colony at Pont-Aven, Brittany. He also sketched in Spain, England, Italy, and Morocco, exhibiting at the Paris Salon and the 1878 Exposition Universelle.

Jones returned to New York in 1881, was elected to the Society of American Artists that year, and became an academician at the National Academy of Design in 1883. He won medals at major expositions including the 1893 Chicago Columbian Exposition and the 1915 San Francisco Pan-Pacific Exposition. Jones painted landscapes of Maryland, West Virginia, and the Berkshire Mountains. His work is held in collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
