Victor Charreton's first profession was as a lawyer. However, in 1902, he gave up his legal career and devoted himself fully to painting. He was introduced to the works of the Impressionists as a young artist, and his lush, brightly colored landscapes recall these earlier works.

Charreton was a founding member of the Salon d'Automne and served on the Salon Comité in Paris. In 1914 he was made a Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur. He exhibited extensively throughout his lifetime, in Paris, New York, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Geneva, Japan. His paintings are in the collections of the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lyon.
