Johannes Rosierse was a genre painter from Dordrecht known for his intimate interior scenes illuminated by candlelight or lamplight. Originally a shoemaker, he later trained under painter Michael Versteeg and developed a style strongly influenced by 17th-century Dutch masters. Rosierse exhibited in major cities including Amsterdam, Groningen, and The Hague, and his works are now held in museums in Dordrecht, Leeuwarden, Montpellier, and Rotterdam.

The painting has been lined, with age cracking, retouching along the upper and lower edges, and a heavy varnish.
