Philip Anthony Moose was a North Carolina painter known for his vibrant landscapes and scenes from his extensive travels. Born in Newton, North Carolina, he received a fellowship to study at the National Academy of Design in New York City in 1940. He served in the U.S. Army in Europe between 1942 and 1945 and became a Pulitzer Prize winner for art in 1948. His travels throughout Europe, South America, Asia, and the Middle East provided rich subject matter for his colorful, atmospheric paintings.
Moose taught at Davidson College and Queens College during the 1950s and 1960s before settling in Blowing Rock, where he became part of the Artists Alley community. His work is held in public collections including the Mint Museum, North Carolina Museum of Art, Hickory Museum of Art, and the High Museum. His later paintings often featured scenes of the North Carolina mountains where he made his home.
