Vanessa Stockard is a contemporary painter known for her playful yet psychologically resonant figurative works that draw on art historical traditions and daily life. She earned a BFA from the College of Fine Arts at the University of New South Wales in 1998 and has since exhibited widely in Australia and internationally, including in Hong Kong, London, Milan, Los Angeles, and New York. Stockard’s paintings often reference Old Master compositions, such as those by Vermeer and Velázquez, reimagined through a contemporary lens that blends humor, intimacy, and narrative. She frequently features her black cat, Kevin. Her work has been recognized through major Australian art prizes, including winning the Stanthorpe Art Prize and multiple shortlists for the Archibald Prize, and is celebrated for its balance of technical fluency, wit, and emotional depth.
